About The Event
Discover how colonial grandeur meets post-colonial identity in the heart of Colombo 7. Join Susil Lamahewa, an architect with interest in archaeology and conservation , for an exclusive architectural journey through the city's most significant public spaces.
This curated walk traces Colombo’s civic history, starting with the Colombo Mayor's House. We then explore the Public Library, analyzing its mid-20th-century design as a cultural hub, before studying the monumental grandeur of the Town Hall.
The journey continues through Viharamahadevi Park, examining this central green space as vital "urban lungs," and culminates at the powerful pairing of Independence Square and Independence Arcade. Here, we analyse the architectural transition from colonial rule viewing the monument of national freedom alongside the successful adaptive reuse of the former colonial Auditor General's building.
